CAC’s position as it relates to Front of Package Labelling on Pre-packaged Foods

The mandate of the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) is to promote and protect the interests and economic welfare of consumers in order to safeguard their lives, health and safety. The Commission therefore supports Front of Package Labelling (FOPL) on pre-packaged foods.

In our recent vote on the matter at the National Mirror Committee for Food labelling – Labelling of pre-packaged foods, the CAC voted for consideration to be given to other models, in addition to the Chilean octagon model presented in the draft standard. The Commission voted not to support the standard in its current form with the view to include ALL other models for equal consideration, thus allowing stakeholders the widest perspectives to inform the decisions taken.

The CAC utilised the voting guidelines prescribed by the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), the regional inter-governmental organisation that facilitates regional standard to arrive at its decision.

The Consumer Affairs Commission stands in full support of any initiative that seeks to reduce non communicable diseases and improve the wellbeing of our citizens; and will work in collaboration with other stakeholders towards the best interest of all.
