Consumers International (CI) is the international umbrella organization responsible for championing the cause of consumers on a global scale. It is a non-profit organization with over 200 members; a global advocacy body which has successfully campaigned against a number of consumer issues in the past. It has made its mark by influencing consumer protection laws, agitating for consumer-focused legislation and encouraging its members to ensure that consumers are allowed a voice in policy decisions in their respective countries. Each March, Consumers International invites all its member countries to join in the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day; a day when increased attention is brought to bear on consumer protection globally, a time when marketplace abuses are highlighted and when consumers are encouraged by consumer organizations and their supporting governments to demand respect for their rights. Through this annual celebration, CI has highlighted flaws in the financial services, lobbied against the marketing of junk food to children and directed greater attention to issues such as climate change among others.
The Consumer Affairs Commission of Jamaica is a member of this international body.
